96 and Still Going Strong

Horace “Hy” Hylan retired from Taylor Freezer in 1975 when he turned 63.  His retirement lasted all of one weekend.  He was back at work the following Monday as a part-time and much loved employee.

Hy has been a part of Taylor Freezer since the original company began in 1946.  At the time, it was located in downtown Boston with four employees.  His goal has always been “to keep every freezer running.”  Hy has a solid work ethic and feels a personal responsibility to those who lease or purchase Taylor Freezer equipment.  Hy has had many jobs at Taylor Freezer over his 64 year career – service manager, freezer repair, shipping, parts and receiving.

“I like to work with my hands,” says Hy, “and I like to have a purpose in my life.  I was not meant for retirement and it was not meant for me.”  When Hy is not working at Taylor Freezer, he still gardens and works in his shop.  His most recent project is a grandfather clock.  Hy still  loves to travel.  He recently drove 5842 miles to Denver and back.  His goal was to ride the Durango & Silverton Railroad in Colorado…and that he did.

Taylor Freezer is Hy’s extended family.  On the workdays, he’s up at 3:30 am and arrives at the office by 4:45.  He’s surrounded by people he cares about and does a job that still brings him personal satisfaction.  “Every Christmas,” says Hy, “I offer to quit, but they never let me!”  And with good reason…
